Photographing clothing: flat lay, mannequin or model
Apparel is the category where the photography decision has the largest commercial consequence, because a shopper cannot judge fit, drape or weight from a description. The photograph is doing work no other listing element can.
There are three approaches, and the right one depends on the garment more than the budget.
Flat lay
The garment laid out and photographed from directly above.
Time: two to four minutes per item once set up. Cost: a sweep, two lights, and a way to mount the camera overhead. Best for: t-shirts, accessories, children's clothing, anything sold on print or pattern rather than fit.
The technique that separates good flat lays from poor ones is stuffing. A shirt laid completely flat looks like a shirt with nobody in it, because it is. Tissue paper inside the sleeves and shoulders gives it enough volume to read as a garment rather than fabric.
Shoot from directly above, not at an angle. Any tilt makes the near end larger, and a t-shirt photographed slightly from the collar end looks like it has a small waist. A tripod with a horizontal arm, or a copy stand, makes this repeatable.
Ghost mannequin
Photographed on a mannequin, with the mannequin removed afterwards so the garment appears to hold its own shape.
Time: five to eight minutes per item, plus editing. Cost: a mannequin, typically £60 to £300 depending on type. Best for: shirts, jackets, dresses, anything where the shape is the selling point.
The standard technique is two exposures: one on the mannequin, and one of the inside of the collar with the garment turned so the neck opening is visible. The two are combined so the back inside collar shows through, which is what makes it read as a garment rather than a cutout.
This is the approach that looks most professional per pound spent, and the editing is genuinely fiddly. Budget for the second shot at capture time, going back for it later means re-dressing the mannequin.
On a model
Time: highly variable; a session of thirty garments in a day is reasonable. Cost: the largest by a wide margin. Best for: anything where fit and drape are the purchase decision, and any premium positioning.
The commercial argument is straightforward and worth stating plainly: for fitted apparel, shoppers convert better when they can see the garment worn. Whether that justifies the cost depends on your margin and volume, not on aesthetics.
The practical warning: a model shot cannot usually be your main image on marketplaces that require a plain white background with the product alone. You will need both.
What every approach needs
Steam it. Every wrinkle is visible and none of them are removable cheaply. Steaming is not optional and it is the step most often skipped under time pressure.
Colour accuracy above all else. Apparel returns are driven substantially by colour mismatch: the garment arriving a different shade from the photograph. This is the category where colour management genuinely matters commercially, not just aesthetically. Set white balance from a reference, convert to sRGB deliberately, and check on a second screen.
Shoot the detail shots in the same session. Fabric close-up, label, stitching, zip. These are supporting images and they sell the quality claim. Doing them later means re-setting the garment.
Black and white garments
The two hardest colours, for opposite reasons.
White on white disappears. Give it a shadow, move the fill light back rather than adding more, so the garment has an edge. If it is genuinely floating, a very light grey sweep and a white replacement afterwards is easier than fighting it in camera.
Black on white blocks up. The temptation is to expose for the background, which leaves the garment as a black silhouette with no visible seams, texture or cut. Expose so the black sits around 20 to 40 rather than 0, and bring the background up afterwards where the detail survives.
Both are cases where shooting slightly flatter than looks right in camera gives you something to work with later, and shooting for a punchy preview does not.
Sizing consistency
If you photograph a size 8 and a size 16 of the same garment at the same distance, they occupy different amounts of frame, and in a search grid they look like different products.
