Prepare product photos for Etsy listings

Etsy generates its own thumbnails from your first photo, which makes the first one a different job from the rest.

There is no thumbnail to upload

Etsy crops your first listing photo automatically. PrepShot ships a preset that frames that photo so the product survives both the square and the 4:3 crops, rather than a phantom thumbnail preset for a file Etsy never asks for.

Transparency renders black

Etsy does not support transparent PNGs, transparent areas come out black. PrepShot outputs JPEG for Etsy by default and composites onto a solid background.

Watch the file size

Etsy’s help pages warn that large images may not finish uploading. PrepShot lowers quality a step at a time until the file fits, and tells you what it settled on.

Everything is converted to sRGB

Etsy converts uploads to sRGB. Doing it yourself, properly, avoids the flat look that comes from a wide-gamut file being reinterpreted rather than converted.

Requirements change, check the date

Marketplace image requirements move, and any article listing exact figures is accurate on the day it was written and decaying from then on. PrepShot’s presets each record the date a human last checked them against the platform’s own documentation, and link to the page they came from, so you can see how stale a value is instead of assuming.
